Los Angeles Doing Away With Red Light Cameras
The discussion started a few weeks ago, according to the LA Times newspaper. It seems that city officials were recommending that citations quit being issued, and systematic removal of the cameras begin. City officials went so far as to say for motorists to "shrug off" any citation they may receive in the mail.
I was thinking about the 'legality' of the program here in Lafayette the other day: if you run a red light, or go speeding through one of the electronically monitored intersections, some 'company' sends you a 'bill'. A company with which you have no agreement or contract. Binding? Well, I'm no legal expert, but it hardly seems like it would be binding. (If I ever become a lawyer, it will be the kind with crescent moon cut out of the door to my office for ventilation.)
In the article, the LA Times even posted a Flash file explaining how red light cameras work.
More recently (this past week), the decision to not renew the red light camera contract was made.
