Temperatures will be warming up and there are school systems that will be returning to classes Thursday, January 18.

Officials with the Lafayette Parish School System just issued this alert to families of students attending schools in the system:

3:00 p.m. release:

After closely monitoring weather and road conditions and thoroughly assessing all facilities, the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) has announced the resumption of regular operations. All schools and facilities will reopen on Thursday, January 18, 2024.
Road conditions have improved, and roads are open for students, faculty, and staff to travel to and from schools. LPSS maintenance and administrative teams have worked to address the impact of the extreme cold weather to facilities, and we anticipate all facilities to be operational tomorrow.
The district appreciates the school community’s cooperation and understanding during the recent extreme cold weather event and looks forward to welcoming students back to classes tomorrow.

9:45 a.m. release:

We hope you and your family are safe amidst the ongoing winter weather conditions. Our administrative and maintenance teams are currently assessing the status of all LPSS schools and facilities, diligently addressing any electrical or heating issues arising from the recent extreme cold weather event.
As of now, we are still planning to reopen all schools and facilities tomorrow, January 18, 2024. If anything keeps schools from opening tomorrow, we will promptly notify families and staff.
Another update will be sent after 3:00 p.m. today. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we navigate through these challenging winter weather conditions to ensure a smooth return to normal operations.
We will update this information after they have released their findings, if there are any, right after 3 o'clock today.
Students have been out of school Monday through Wednesday this week due to precipitation that froze causing some hazardous conditions on local roadways.
