I'm a Baby Boomer. The performance cars of  the 1960's have long held a fascination for me, especially the "Pony Cars.''
The Ford mustang is the only Pony Car that's been in continuous production for 50 years. It was introduced at the New York World's Fair in 1964. It sold 400,000 units, far exceeding expectations. A current faculty member at the Unversity of Louisiana at Lafayette, Jerry Malinowski, was on the design team.
GM, Chrysler, and American Motors jumped into the arena, offering Camaro, Firebird, 'Cuda, Challenger, Javelin and AMX. They're all extinct except Camaro & Challenger. AP reports, the 50th Anniversary Edition Mustang GT was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show. A bright yellow model is on short term display on the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building.
Executive Chairman Bill Ford said, "If you don't like this car, you don't like cars."
1,964 50th Anniversary Mustangs will be offered for commercial sale. Base price of the original offering in 1964 was $2,300. Ford has not announced pricing for the Anniversary model.
