If you ask me, World Compliments Day ought to be everyday! But, alas, it's March 1, which means that you get to do something nice for someone today. Us southerners are experts at complimenting people, places and things. So I thought I would pass along  some of my own personal favorite gracious sayings, with some help from Southern Living magazine.

  • They're like two peas in a pod
  • She's as sweet as cherry pie
  • He's as smart as all get out (!)
  • She's as pretty as a peach / picture
  • Sugar, honey, pumpkin, or sweetie pie -and not referring to food
  • She's sure got gumption!
  • Your mama must have raised you right
  • Can you write that recipe down for me?

And some not so complimentary phrases, but we always say them with a smile to take the sting out.

  • Actin' too big for his britches
  • Slower than molasses in winter
  • You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear
  • Madder than a wet hen
  • Jumpy as a cat on a hot tin roof
  • Crooked as a barrel of snakes
  • She's a hotty totty - (definitely NOT a compliment)
  • He's 'big doggin' it' - my dad's favorite
