BBB Alerts Acadiana To Netflix Scam

The Better Business Bureau of Acadiana says there is a Netflix scam that customers need to be aware of that aims to steal your personal information.

Consumers who have reported the scam say a bogus company is getting Netflix users to go to a phony webpage via a pop-up or an email that is close to the actual Netflix login page.

Once you enter your account information, the fake website claims that your account has been suspended.  When you call the fake customer service number a “representative” recommends that you download the “Netflix support software”.  That’s when your information can be compromised as they then have full access to your computer.

BBB says Netflix is a reputable company that is being taken advantage of by scammers.

What does the BBB suggest?  There are three things you should look for to know that it’s not the real Netflix contacting you.  They are:

  • The phone number is not for the real Neflix.  It belongs to a call center in India.
  • The webpage is a pop-up or they send a fake email.
  • The “representative” wants to log into your computer via remote software.

The Better Business Bureau of Acadiana has some advice on how to avoid any scam:

  • Never let someone login to your computer remotely. When someone logs in, they can do anything on your computer. They can access anything including personal and financial information.
  • Do not click links in emails. It is better to type the address in the search bar manually.
  • If the URL seems odd, do not continue to go to the site. If it is a scam, it will most likely have an unusual URL. It will likely contain a common name but be accompanied by some jumbled letters or numbers.
  • Always look up the company’s phone number on their website. If you need to call a company, look it up on their official website. This can make sure that you are calling a legitimate number.

As always, the BBB suggests that you check with them anytime you question a business practice.
