UL Softball Defeats South Alabama To Clinch Series

The Sun Belt Conference softball series win streak continues for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.

9th-ranked Louisiana defeated the South Alabama Jaguars, 11-2, in 5-inning mercy-rule fashion, in the middle game of a three-game, weekend, league series in Mobile, Alabama on Saturday afternoon.

Coupled with their win over South Alabama in the series opener on Friday night, UL extended their league series win streak to 48, a school and Sun Belt Conference record.

Louisiana has not dropped a conference series since the weekend of St. Patrick's Day in 2013.

The Cajuns, who also defeated South Alabama, 11-7, on Friday evening, have now outscored the Jaguars, 22-9, in the series.

With the triumph, UL also ran their Sun Belt Conference win streak to 8 games to begin this season, while improving their overall league win streak to 13 games, dating back to last year.

Louisiana got on the scoreboard first, plating three runs in the top half of the second inning, when Alissa Dalton blasted a two-out, three-run home run, her third of the season, to grab a 3-0 lead.

South Alabama scored their first run in the bottom half of the second inning, when Kennedy Cronan hit a two-out solo homer, her 7th of the year, to trim the deficit to 3-1.

UL added two more runs in the top half of the 3rd inning, when Bailey Curry crushed a two-out solo homer, her second of the series, and 5th of the season, before Aeriyl Mass, who entered as a pinch-runner, stole second and third, prior to crossing the plate on a wild-pitch, to widen their lead 5-1.

The Cajuns put the game completely away in the top half of the 4th inning, scoring 6 runs on 3 hits, with four of those runs courtesy of a grand slam home run by Lexie Comeaux, her 7th of the season, to make it 11-1.

The Jaguars added their final run in the bottom half of the 4th inning, when Savanna Mayo drove home a run with a single to right, to make it 11-2.

It wasn't nearly enough however, as Louisiana coasted to the 11-2 mercy-rule win.

Louisiana, who outhit South Alabama, 11-6, was led at the plate by Comeaux, who went  3-for-3 with a homer and four RBI's, while Dalton and Curry also homered.

Carrie Boswell (5-0) recorded her second win of the series inside the circle for the Cajuns, tossing 1.2 innings of relief.

Alexis Reid (8-11) suffered the loss for the Jaguars, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits over 2.2 innings of work.

With the victory, the Cajuns improved to 25-4, overall, and 8-0 in Sun Belt Conference play, while South Alabama dropped to 11-17, and 1-7, respectively.

The series finale will take place on Sunday afternoon, with first-pitch scheduled for 1 o'clock.
