Citizens of Louisiana who have been prescribed medical cannabis by their doctors might soon have a different method of taking their medicine. The Louisiana Senate approved legislation that would make smokeable forms of cannabis legal, with a prescription, in the state of Louisiana.

Under the legislation which expands Louisiana's medical marijuana program, those who have been prescribed could purchase up to two and a half ounces of "flower" every two weeks from a state-licensed pharmacy. If I may editorialize for just a moment. Y'all, that's a lot of pot!

I did a little research. Out of a one-ounce bag of "flower" or smokable cannabis you can create about 84 cigarette-sized joints. A joint is a marijuana cigarette, you should have learned that from watching Starsky and Hutch back in the 70s. This legislation allows for a user to purchase two and a half ounces every two weeks. That's 210 joints every two weeks or 15 joints a day.

That's too much in my humble opinion. Y'all that's 420 (coincidence?) joints a month. Let's assume that one joint provides four hours of "relief". That would be 1,680 hours of "relief". If you do the math that would mean each patient could have up to 70 days of "relief" every month. See, it's too much.

One thing I did want to clarify about this legislation. The Senate did make some technical changes to the House version of this bill so it will have to go back to the House for approval. That is expected to happen. Then it will be passed on to the Governor who is expected to sign it.

Patients are prescribed medical cannabis for a variety of reasons. Among the conditions that qualify are Cancer, Chron's Disease, Chronic Pain, Epilepsy, Glaucoma, HIV/Aids, PTSD, and a host of others. In order to be prescribed medical cannabis, you will need to visit a Dr. that is licensed to prescribe it. Then you will have to fill that prescription at one of the state's nine medical marijuana pharmacies.
