The Powerball jackpot has already crossed it and the Mega Millions jackpot is pretty close to crossing it too. What are they crossing? The $300 million mark. Also, known as the point in which non-regular lottery players start to pay attention.

There is something about $300 million that makes the casual lottery fan start to take notice. The current Powerball Jackpot is estimated to best that $300 million mark by $22 million at the next drawing on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Mega Millions Jackpot is a mere $245  million but if there are no big winners Tuesday or Friday night, that jackpot will cross the "Mendoza Line" for lottery players as well.

In case you're wondering some math geeks have worked out a formula on when the best time for you, the casual lottery player, to purchase a ticket. The formula includes the amount of money you could take home, the taxes you'd have to pay, and the potential for splitting the pot with other players.

That sum is $584 million. which is about what the combined assets of both the Mega Millions and Powerball would be if you happen to win them both this week.

I wouldn't hold my breath.
