(Lafayette, Louisiana ) — Another school year is over, and the kids are out of school for the summer, but parents, don't let your guard down.

As kids finish up another school year, there's a lot of excitement amongst the kids and their parents, but as kids come home from school one last time, you need to do this before it's too late.

In recent years, I have noticed that more kids bring their own lunch to school, and often their lunch boxes end up in the child's book bag. With that said, now is the time to inspect your child's book bag for not only old papers and books, but also for leftover lunch.

The last thing you want is for there to be food left in their lunchbox for weeks or months, and when you open it later on, there's a science project growing in it.

So, while everyone is excited that school is out for the summer, parents need to remember to inspect and remove anything from this child's book bag for the summer.

You certainly do not want a half-eaten sandwich in the lunchbox for months. It only takes a few seconds to dispose of anything that is in your kid's lunchbox, so take the time, then begin the long summer break.

One more thing, if you have family or friends with kids who bring their own lunch to school, you may want to share this reminder with them so that they aren't greeted with mold and mildew when they open the lunchbox at the start of the new school year.
