(Opelousas, LA) - The cost of getting groceries in Acadiana is astronomical, and the people of our region are once again stepping up for those who need a little help getting food on the table, as the Giving Fridge and Pantry has opened in Opelousas.

Communities across Acadiana are banding together to make sure that people having trouble getting food are being helped in our area.

This latest community fridge is located at the corner of Court and Vine Streets in Opelousas on the property of St. Landry Bank and Trust Company.

For those who are in the area and want to become a part of this great program, you can fill out a form by going to https://forms.office.com/r/aBsU2xR0Rh.

According to the Facebook post from the Giving Fridge and Pantry in Opelousas, these are the items that are accepted:

  • We currently accept food items: cooked foods, canned goods, dry goods, snacks, drinks, etc.
  • Donations can be placed directly in the fridge or pantry. For cooked meals we ask that you please serve the meal in a food safe container, ensuring the container is sealed properly and taped, please write the date the meal was prepared, what the meal is and if there are common allergens in the ingredients (dairy, nuts, seafood, etc.) Please refrain from putting any expired items in the fridge and pantry.

The following is a list of the community fridge locations in Acadiana:

  • The Lafayette Community Fridge is at 2905 East Simcoe, next door to McMillan's Pub.
  • St. Barnabas Church in Lafayette at 400 Camellia Blvd has a community pantry and fridge. 
  • The Maurice Community Fridge is located at Landry's Pharmacy, 106 Milton Road, Maurice.
  • The Sunset Community Pantry is at the Fire Department Volunteer Center, located at 872 Napoleon Ave in Sunset.
  • In Carencro, you can find the Carencro Kiwanis Community Pantry in the pavilion behind Carencro City Hall at 210 East Saint Peter St. in Carencro. 
  • The Space Cat Community Fridge in Lafayette is located at 213 Mudd Avenue.
  • The Giving Fridge is at 513 West Cherry Lane. For parking, please park on the street near that address when stopping to pick something up.
