Anyone who is an animal lover, or is looking for a furr-ever friend can now do so at a brand new facility in Lafayette. The new Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Center opened on Monday at 410 Dugas Road off University Avenue. The sparkling building is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Monday through Friday.

The old building on Pont des Mouton was 9,000 square feet, and the new facility is 20,000 square feet, which means there is room for at least 90 kennels. The 'doggie dormitory" also has access to an outdoor area, and a "bark wall" that will reduce excessive barking and stress for the canine clients. The Pont de Mouton site was originally built as a rabies clinic and then developed into the parish shelter later on.

The facility also has four turf-lined doggie play yards, which will be ideal for not only exercise but a place that families can see and play with potential adoptees. The layout of the new building will also allow for visitors to see the pets without having an escort from the shelter accompany them.

But of course, the new digs are also perfect for those looking for some cat companionship. There is now room for 70 cat kennels with portals separating the litter areas from where the kitties live and eat. The care center also has much-needed room for surgeries and spaying and neutering services for both dogs and cats.

The shelter also reached 'No-Kill" status in February, which means that 90% of the animals who come through the doors will be saved.
