Louisiana shoppers will be able to save a few bucks later this month as a state sales tax holiday will happen the weekend of November 20-21.

House Speaker Clay Schexnayder, R-Gonzales, sponsored the measure to help Louisiana residents and businesses recovering from multiple hurricanes and coping with the coronavirus pandemic.

For the holiday weekend, Louisiana's 4.45% state sales tax will not be charged on the first $2,500 purchase. However, the tax holiday doesn't cover car, truck, and other vehicle purchases. It also doesn't apply to local sales taxes.

Louisiana has had several tax break weekends in recent years, but those have been suspended through mid-2025 as part of a tax deal that lawmakers and Governor John Bel Edwards reached two years ago to balance the state's budget.

According to a nonpartisan financial analysis of this sales tax holiday bill, the state is estimated to lose $4.5 million in sales tax collections because of the tax holiday.
