Louisiana Drivers Warned About Toxic Item in Vehicles
(Lafayette, Louisiana) - Everything we touch has bacteria on it, but there's one item we love to toss around that is filled with bacteria.
We use them every day and often put them in our pockets, on our desks, or in the cup holders of our vehicles. We're talking about your vehicle keys.
According to the experts at Money Supernarket, your vehicle's keys are covered with bacteria. How much? The experts say your keys contain four times the amount of bacteria found on your cell phone and computer keyboard.
In a study, those at Money Supermarket also found that nearly a third of drivers never clean their keys with wipes, yet continue to use and touch them daily.

The most common bacteria species on car keys was Staphylococcus epidermidis, which is often found on human skin. So, what can you do to clean your keys?
How to Clean Vehicle Keys
To keep your keys clean, use a damp cloth daily to remove built-up bacteria. However, avoid using bleach on the keys, as it can damage the material. Bleach could corrode essential parts of keys.
Additionally, you should never dip or saturate your keys. Not only can water cause rusting, but with newer keys now used to start your vehicle, water can damage electrical components inside the key.
While we are known to wipe down many parts of our vehicles, such as the dashboard or steering wheel, when cleaning our cars, it's essential to clean the keys as well.
Who Cleans Car Keys Most
If you're curious, the researchers found that BMW drivers are more likely to clean their car keys than any other type of driver. I'm not sure why BMW drivers are more aware of this, but it sounds like we can all do better when it comes to cleaning the keys to our vehicles.
