Young Man Cutting Grass in Lafayette Saluted for Efforts

(Lafayette, Louisiana) - A young man cutting grass in Lafayette recentlly caught my attention for not only what he was doing, but how he was doing it.

Too often, we assume that kids and teens these days are just lazy and don't want to work, but that's not entirely accurate. There are a lot of young adults working these days, and one young man, hard at work, caught my attention while I was driving down Congress St. in Lafayette.

A young man, who had to be in his early teens, was cutting someone's grass in their yard on a very hot day, and you could tell he was sweating as he pushed the lawnmower across the lawn.

I watched this young man struggle for a few seconds, and then, as he began cutting parallel to the road, I noticed he was well-trained by someone. Rather than blowing the yard trimmings in the road as many do in Lafayette, this young man made certain that the trimmings were blown back in the yard.

Yes, he had his push mower positioned so that the grass he was cutting would not end up on the road, and become a potential hazard.

Avoid Blowing Grass in Roadways

I know that this may sound simple, but this young man took it upon himself to make certain that grass wasn't just blown onto the road, which is an eyesore, and, further, he was considerate of those who may be on motorcycles during this time of year.

Yes, loose grass blown onto the roads can be a hazard for cyclists, and yard trimmings can also impede drainage during those summer thunderstorms we often get.

So, to the young man who was working in a yard when the heat index surpassed 100 degrees and was mindful enough not to blow the yard trimmings in the road, I say thank you. And to the person who trained me on how to properly cut grass while being considerate, I say Thank You as well.

Now, if we can only get some adults to do likewise this summer, our roads would be much better and less dangerous. Remember, it doesn't take much effort to keep the grass you're cutting in your yard, and if it's a bit much, you can always resort to an old-school tool some still use in yards — a rake.
