
Where You Can Get Warm in Lafayette and Surrounding Areas
(99.9 KTDY) - Temperatures are no joke in Lafayette and our surrounding areas, and local communities have warming shelters for those who need a place to go to avoid these colder temperatures.
Meteorologist Daniel Phillips with our weather partners at KATC explains that bitterly cold temperatures will be with us. Our nights will be very cold with most evenings this week seeing temperatures in the twenties.
With temperatures downtown dropping so low at night, warming shelters have opened.
Lafayette Warming Shelter Location and Hours
According to officials with Lafayette Consolidated Government, a warming shelter is open at the Dupuis Recreation Center. It will be run with the Lafayette Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and community partners.
The shelter will remain open through Tuesday, January 27, at 10:00 a.m.
The warming shelter will be in operation for the following schedule:
- Reopens Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. through Wednesday at 9:00 a.m.
- Reopens Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. through Thursday at 9:00 a.m.
- Reopens Friday at 6:00 p.m. through Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
The shelter is open for anyone experiencing homelessness or who does not have adequate heating where they currently are.
Iberia Parish Warming Shelter Details
In Iberia Parish, a warming shelter has been opened at the Robert B. Green Veterans' Memorial Building, which is located at 1201 Field Street in New Iberia.
The Iberia Parish shelter is expected to close at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Officials are asking those who are going there to bring their own food, blankets, and personal items.
Those experiencing homelessness in Iberia Parish are encouraged to visit the homeless shelter located at 307 Robertson Street in New Iberia.
Opelousas Warming Shelter Information
St. Landry Parish Government has set up a warming shelter in Opelousas. It's been set up at Indian Hills Country Club, at 1141 East Prudhomme Street.
The St. Landry shelter will be open through Tuesday.
Vermilion Parish Warming Shelter Details
Two centers to help people in Vermilion Parish have been set up. One warming center will be in Kaplan, at the Knights of Columbus Hall,l which can be found at 1007 Lejeune Avenue.
The other warming shelter in Vermilion Parish has been set up at the Faith Hope Center, 407 B K Stevens, in Abbeville.
