(Lafayette, Louisiana) - According to a report by KATC, Lafayette, Louisiana, community leaders are coming together to offer summer camp options for kids looking for something to do during the break.

Being able to discard composition notebooks, pencils, pens, and homework assignments is exactly what has happened for students in the parish as the school year comes to an end.

Leaders In Lafayette Parish Offering Camp

Having to finish homework assignments and listen to teachers in a classroom is now in the rear-view mirror for Lafayette Parish public school students.

A retired teacher has stepped up to organize a group of volunteers who will offer summer camp to kids at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center.

District 1 Lafayette City Councilman Elroy Broussard told KATC about the children,

A lot of them can't go anywhere or on vacation. So they need something to occupy their time, occupy their mind.

Joyce Gaymon, a retired teacher, is teaming up with Councilman Broussard to make this camp happen for kids. Volunteers will help them experience a great summer program.

The camp will be held from Monday, June 9, to Friday, July 18, from 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

  • Reading
  • Music
  • Games
  • Outdoor Activities

Officials with the program say they are asking parents to contact them as soon as possible, as the 100 slots will likely fill up quickly.
