Lafayette Firefighters Remove American Flag From House Fire

(Lafayette, Louisiana) - The Lafayette Fire Department responded to a house fire on Wednesday, August 27th, and while inside the house, they located an American Flag that was in danger of burning.

Well, knowing that it was a keepsake, firefighters quickly removed the flag from the burning home in hopes of returning it to the family.

According to a press release by the LFD, the homeowner left with his younger son before the fire started, and no one was home.

Someone driving past the home saw the smoke, and firefighters arrived in less than five minutes. Sadly, the blaze destroyed most of what was in the dwelling, but the American flag was saved.

Knowing the flag was likely very special to the homeowner, two Lafayette firefighters took it from the house, folded it, and returned it to a family member who showed up on the scene.

The LFD documented and shared the heartfelt moment on its social media page.

As you will see here, you can tell these firefighters wanted to honor the flag and return it to the family. A separate photo shows the family member accepting the folded flag from a firefighter, and if a photo could talk, it would shout praise and gratitude.

Too often, we think of firefighters as men and women who simply put out fires, but they often go far beyond that, and these photos from a scene in Lafayette prove it.

I applaud these firefighters for doing what they did for this homeowner. And while they may have lost much of the contents of their home in the blaze, they still have the red, white, and blue to hold onto.

As for the cause of the blaze, fire officials say that it originated at an electrical receptacle in the kitchen. A loose connection at one of the outlets may have caused an overload. The fire was ruled an accident.
