If you hadn’t already guessed, this post contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War, so if you haven’t seen it yet, get out of here! For those who have and are still in mourning over our lost heroes, James Gunn has revealed something that’ll make it sting even worse: the meaning behind Groot’s final line in the movie.

After Thanos snapped half the universe to smithereens, some characters vanished before they could even get a word out, while others like Spider-Man had a much longer, especially tragic sendoff. But Groot's end is even more painful now. Just as the fast growing tree was dissolving into ash, he said one final “I am Groot” to Rocket. But we never got the translation. A fan took to Twitter to ask the Guardians director, who wrote some of his characters’ Infinity War dialogue, what those final words meant.

Dad! He called him dad! Moody teen Groot who just wanted to play his dang video game and be left alone to sulk about the ship, viewed Rocket as a father figure and called out to him in his final moments. If that doesn’t break your heart then I don’t know what will. It’s certainly a different dynamic than the original Groot and Rocket had in the first Guardians film, and leaves a lot to be explored in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, you know, depending on however/whenever Marvel brings its beloved deceased heroes back. Until then, happy grieving!
