Louisiana Sheriff’s Department Issues Important Homecoming Reminder

Homecoming season is in full swing in South Louisiana and that means the pranks are underway too.

Years ago I was shocked to see what happens to some yards in Acadiana as schools celebrate homecoming. Yards were littered with toilet paper and other things, and while the pranks are often harmless, they can damage property.

Long gone are just the days of toilet paper in trees and bushes for homecoming week, in recent years we've seen reports of damage done to homes and vehicles and that is when it goes too far.

Just a few years ago one parent reported that their home was sprayed with kitchen condiments and that eggs were broken on top of their vehicles. That is just a bit much.

Now, several local law enforcement agencies are getting involved and they are reminding students and parents that charges can be filed if damage is done to property during these homecoming pranks.

Last year we noted that not only are these pranks going too far, but kids are now showing up in the late hours of the night in neighborhoods to pull off these pranks, thus putting themselves in danger. While many may be aware of the simple pranks during homecoming week, some are not, and that is where kids can put themselves in harm's way.

The St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office released this statement on social media, and we want to share it with you. It may also be a great idea for you to share this reminder with your kids and with others on social media as more and more schools begin homecoming festivities across Acadiana.

The last thing anyone wants is for someone to get hurt or get in trouble over a simple prank.
