A woman in south Louisiana is behind bars after police found several dead cats in her house, with many of them in a freezer.

The Morgan City Police Department went to a residence on McDermott Dr. to perform a wellness check on those living at the house, but when no one answered the door at the front of the house, officers went to the rear of the house and that's when they spotted a dead cat in the house.

Officers finally made contact with the owner of the house, and they could smell a strong odor coming from the house upon entry.

The next day, detectives with the Morgan Cith Police Dept. obtained a search warrant to search the house where the odor was coming from, and that is when they found 8 dead cats in various rooms.

As the investigation continued throughout the house, detectives later found 14 more dead cats in the freezer. Sheri Hite, the occupant of the house, told police she put the cats in the freezer to later dispose of them.

According to the MCP, one cat was found alive and turned over to animal control, while the carcasses were also turned over for proper disposal.

Hite was arrested and charged with 23 counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. She told police she picked up many of the cats in the Baton Rouge area to care for them.
