WWL-TV 4 reported that on Thursday morning, the first incident unfolded when a speeding vehicle lost control, colliding with both guardrails in the southbound lane. The impact of the crash caused the vehicle to strike another car before flipping over. The severity of the collision forced the closure of the bridge, leading to significant traffic congestion during the peak morning commute, with the closure lasting for nearly an hour.

Causeway General Manager, Carlton Dufrechou, provided insights into the incident, stating, "We actually had two injuries in that, the driver of the first vehicle that flipped and the second one, we had to actually pull the door off to get the driver out of the vehicle." The incident highlighted the immediate consequences of reckless driving on the Causeway.

In addition, there were two separate accidents on the Causeway Wednesday. The first occurred when a vehicle experienced a tire blowout, leading to a collision. Shortly after, a pickup truck narrowly avoided plunging off the bridge when it rear-ended an SUV, causing the northbound span to be closed during the evening commute.

Dufrechou emphasized that these accidents underscored the dangers of inattentive driving, stating, "The driver pretty much acknowledged that his head was not where it should have been. Really got to make an effort, a mental effort to pay attention."

Causeway officials have identified one of the leading causes of accidents on the bridge as distracted driving, particularly individuals looking down at their phones instead of focusing on the road and surrounding traffic. Carlton Dufrechou condemned this behavior, stating, "Man, that’s not only stupid, it’s selfish. It’s one thing if you hurt yourself, but more than likely, particularly on a bridge like the Causeway you’re going to hurt somebody else."

Dufrechou further highlighted that the bridge witnessed approximately 130 accidents the previous year, most attributed to reckless or inattentive driving.
