Lafayette, La (KMDL) - There are many mysteries in this world.

Like, what's the reason for the little pocket in jeans?

Why don't elevator close door buttons work?

Why does time seem to go faster the older you get?

Why can’t you hum while holding your nose? Go ahead and try it, I'll wait.

While these little mysteries continue to occupy our thoughts, there's one question that we've all asked multiple times throughout our lives.

Why do hot dogs come 10 to a pack, but there are only 8 buns to a pack?

Why Are Hot Dogs Sold In 10 Packs And Hot Dog Buns In 8 Packs?

Oh, so you know, the little pocket in your jeans was originally for pocket watches in the 1800s. It just kind of stuck.

Also, the "close door" buttons in most elevators aren't actually hooked up to anything. It's just a dummy button that doesn't do anything.

So what's the deal with 10 packs of hot dogs and 8 packs of hot dog buns? From allrecipes.com -

Have you ever bought hot dogs and buns for a cookout, only to realize you’re either two buns short or two wieners over? You’d think that, by now, the makers of America’s favorite ballpark snack would have solved this weird puzzle.

Think again.

As allrecipes.com points out, over 80 years in roughly the 1940s, hot dogs were bought from local neighborhood butcher shops and weren't packaged the way they are now.

Butcher shops typically sell meat by the pound, and it takes 10 hotdogs to equal one pound.

This is why hot dogs are still sold in packs of 10 today.

This brings us to why hot dog buns are sold 8 to a pack.

It has to do with efficiency.

From allrecipes.com -

"Buns are typically baked in clusters of four in pans designed to produce eight rolls apiece.

It simply doesn’t make sense for most bakeries to completely upend their production systems and pan designs to accommodate the average number of hot dogs in a pack."

I get it, it just makes sense to produce 10 packs of hotdogs for the weight and 8 packs of hot dog buns because of how machines are set up in bakeries.

Why not just make the hot dogs a little bigger so 8 equal to one pound instead of 10?

There. I fixed it.
