(KMDL-FM) Maybe it's because I work in the late evening or early morning. Maybe it's because I am an alcoholic. Regardless, I have done my time eating and sobering up at several of the 99 different locations of Waffle House Restaurants in Louisiana.

There are Waffle Houses in Shreveport, Bossier City, Lake Charles, Alexandria, Lafayette, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and countless other communities across our state, and I am a fan of each and every one of them.

What Kind of Food Does Waffle House Serve?

Waffle House Restaurants promise "Good Food Fast," and I think they live up to that motto, and they are open all day, every day, it seems. Okay, they started closing locations in the middle of the night on weekends for "in-house" dining, but you could still get your Waffle House order on the App and eat it in the parking lot during those off hours on the weekend.

In addition to the food, which is Classic American, I like the people who work at Waffle House restaurants. They always hire friendly, hard-working people who seem to delight in being of service to me. And yes, I tip them well, and I think you should too.

What Is the Waffle House Hurricane Index?

We all know about the Waffle House "post-hurricane index" and how government agencies use the restaurant and its opening and closing policies to assess damage after a major storm. But did you know there is one sight that you can see at a Waffle House that should make you turn around and run, and even call the police.

If I asked you to describe the windows of a Waffle House, you'd probably say "wet" if you were talking about Waffle House in the South in the summer. The air conditioning will do that. The other way most people describe windows at a Waffle House is "open". Not as in to let in fresh air, but the blinds are open.

But what if you pull into a Waffle House parking lot and can't see the customers inside? What if all the blinds are closed? According to one TikTok video, it's a sign there's something wrong.

We should note that Waffle House corporate office has not commented on the phenomenon, and it's true that there have been some false alarms created by people who saw the closed blinds as a call for help. According to a person who works at Waffle House,

In inclement weather they are lowered to protect from glass in the event of a storm breaking a window, and during the day for customer comfort and cooling. At night, we frequently close them for the to go windows just because people are weird and stand and stare. That's it. That's the whole reason. There is your official waffle house stance on windows.
It's another instance of, just because someone shared a video on the internet, that doesn't make it true.
