(KMDL-FM) It seems as if almost every month, if not every week, local, state, and national law enforcement agencies are warning us of a new scam, a new crime, or a new way to make us feel unsafe in our own skin. The Internet has helped with all of the dangers that can lurk after every keystroke. But the rise in this new crime is not online.

This new crime is bold, it's brazen, and it can happen right under your nose, or perhaps behind your back would be the better way to describe where this crime happens. It has happened in broad daylight, and criminals love to prey especially on female victims.

What Is Sliding And Why Does That Crime Target Female Motorists?

If you're not familiar with the term "sliding" as it pertains to criminal activity, you really need to turn up your "Spidey Senses". Sliding isn't something that happens to you while you're driving, but it does involve your car. Sliding usually occurs when you stop for fuel at a local gas station or convenience store.

Let me describe what "sliding" is for you. I will caution you, it will make you feel uncomfortable because we've all been guilty of the lack of situational awareness that lends itself to becoming a victim of crime, like sliding.

Here's the scenario: you pull your vehicle up to a gas pump to fill your tank. You retrieve your credit card from your wallet and then leave your wallet in your purse on the front seat of your car. You then insert your card, enter your rewards numbers or PIN, and then you pump your gas.

Meanwhile, a ne'er-do-well has slid into your car via your unlocked passenger door, and while you're messing with the gas pump, they take your purse, your phone, the change in your console, or any other item that is readly accessable. The thief then "slides" out and quietly closes the door before the gas pump stops.

Yes, it's possible you could be distracted by the video screen at the pump, the loud stereo from the car next to you, or perhaps you were tempting fate and taking a cellphone call next to the gas pump while you were pumping the fuel. See how easy it is not to pay attention? I told you this would make you feel uncomfortable.

How Can You Protect Yourself from Sliding or Slider Crimes?

If you want to protect yourself from "sliding" crimes, here are some suggestions, compliments of the Nashville, Tennessee Police Department:

Always turn off the vehicle and lock all doors before stepping away to pump gas.
• Keep purses, bags, and electronics out of sight, preferably in the trunk.
• Stay aware of your surroundings while refueling.
• Avoid using your phone while pumping gas.
• Remove earbuds or headphones so you can hear activity around you.
• If something feels suspicious, stop pumping and get back into your locked vehicle.

Those suggestions will certainly make you less likely to become a victim of this kind of crime.
