On any given weekend between September and April in the great state of Louisiana you can find them. They are happening in Crowley, Scott, Bunkie, Alexandria, Shreveport, and dare I say even Tallulah. The "they" we are speaking of is a good old-fashioned Gumbo Cookoff.

A lot of communities use this Cajun dish as a reason to get folks together and raise some money. We did it for the Acadiana High School Wreckin' Ram Marching Band last Sunday and I bet you can find a gumbo cookoff happening somewhere in Louisiana and especially the parishes that make up Acadiana this weekend.

When you hear the word gumbo your thoughts probably shift instantly to a "Cajun" state of mind. That hearty soup, or is it a stew, has gotten more than a few winter-chilled Cajuns through the deer and duck season and on to Mardi Gras.

But have you ever stopped to consider what it takes to be "Cajun"? Sure, you could be fortunate enough to be born in Cajun Country but does that make you "Cajun"? We think to earn the title of Cajun or in my case Honorary Cajun from Mississippi, you need to know certain things about life in Louisiana and Cajun Culture.

We put together a dozen questions and based on how you answer them, we'll know whether you're Certified, Close Enough, or Tested Positive for Nebraska. It's all in fun and if you've got some other questions you think we should add, please send them in.
