With 2020 coming to an end (and not fast enough, let's be honest), there are a few good things that we are seeing before we wrap up a very challenging year.

Tujague's Restaurant in New Orleans has been a staple in the French Quarter at 823 Decatur St. for almost 160 years. The second oldest restaurant in the city has been open since 1856, and was originally located at 811 Decatur, but was moved in 1914. Now, Tujague's has moved again, but just down the street to 429 Decatur. The historic restaurant is currently in the former location of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, which closed last year. The only other restaurant in New Orleans that is older than Tujague's is the world-famous Antoine's, which has been serving customers since 1840.

The famed eatery opened back up for business on Monday, December 28, much later than was originally projected. Owner Mark Latter, who is a second-generation proprietor, told NOLA.com “I know a lot of people will miss the old place, but the truth is if we were still there Tujague’s would not exist anymore. It’s very important to me and my family that this restaurant continues.”

Some of the historic artifacts will move down the street to the new location, but a lot of it was deemed too fragile to survive, even just a few blocks away. The famous stand-up bar is staying, as is the celebrated green neon sign which towered over the restaurant entrance. Latter told NOLA.com that he hopes to replicate the sign in the near future. I'm hoping for great success for Tujague's, because it has sentimental meaning for my family. My grandparents dined there on their honeymoon in the 1930's, and it remains a nostalgic destination for our family members to this day.
