Governor John Bel Edwards says be prepared for a significant rain and storm surge event from a storm system that’s expected to strengthen into a Category One Hurricane and make landfall in southwest Lousiana over the weekend. Edwards says the yet to be named storm will move slowly towards the Louisiana coast.

“Which means there can be significant problems with some rain bands, it will seem that the storm is stationary and it just keep dumping rains in certain areas,” said Edwards.

Edwards is expected to declare a statewide emergency. He says this is just not a south Louisiana event.

“That once this system makes landfall it’s going to move north, it will eventually bring heavy rainfall to central and north Louisiana as well,” said Edwards.

It remains unclear where this storm system will make landfall or how strong it will get. He says they anticipate a storm surge near the mouth of the Mississippi River between three and four feet, which is a concern since the river is already at a very high level. He says there will likely be overtopping of levees in Plaquemines Parish.
