During his daily press briefing yesterday  Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards was about as upbeat on the coronavirus pandemic as we have seen him in quite a while. True, we are far from being done with COVID-19. But it is also true our state has made some great gains against the disease since the latest wave of cases washed across the state during July.

The Governor told the media and you and I that we, Louisiana, are seeing decreases in some very important metrics regarding the pandemic. Yesterday, the state saw the largest single-day drop in hospitalizations in a very long time. In fact, the number of those hospitalized with COVID-19 fell by 73 yesterday.

Governor Edwards also said the state's positivity rate is dropping too. In fact, four out of the nine regions designated by the Louisiana Department of Health have seen positivity rates fall below 10%. If you're not familiar with the positivity rate metric, below 10% is good.

While the Governor's press briefing was for the most part positive, he was quick to remind all of us that now is not the time to let down our guard against the deadly virus. With college campuses opening and many school systems preparing to return to class now is the time to make sure that all common sense protocols are being followed.

The Governor also reminded residents of the state to include COVID-19 supplies such as hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and disinfectant sprays in their hurricane kits as the state will likely be dealing with at least one landfalling tropical cyclone over the next week.

Preparation and information are the keys to beating COVID-19 and surviving tropical weather. Let's make sure that you are ready for both.
