Jim Nabors passed away today at the age of 87. He had quite a career, getting his big break from Andy Griffith himself.

It wasn't until later in life that I realized that Gomer's voice was not Nabor's natural voice, as he spoke in a higher pitch for the show. Nabor's real speaking voice was a lower tone and, surprising to many, his singing voice was BOOMING!

One of my favorite episodes was when he was acting as a lookout, and his signal that someone was approaching was "Hooty-Hoot! Hooty-Hoot!".

In this episode of Gomer Pyle, USMC, Gomer performs at a Navy function along with the Marine Corps Band.  Just listen to that voice!
