Former Louisiana State Senator Elbert Guillory Announces Candidacy for Lieutenant Governor
Former State Senator Elbert Guillory announced yesterday that he will be running for Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana.
Guillory made the announcement at a press conference at Alexandria's Hotel Bentley.
The 78-year-old attorney and politician from Opelousas has devoted 50 years of his life to public service. He joined the U.S. Navy as a young man and would later spend ten years in state office.
From January 2007 to January 2009, Guillory was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from the 40th district. Then, from May 2009 to January 2016, he served in the Louisiana Senate representing the 24th district.
Guillory has been a part of both major parties during his political career. Up until 2007, he was a registered Republican. He became a Democrat in 2007 when he first ran for the state House in the heavily Democratic District 40.
Then during the 2017 regular session of the Louisiana Legislature, Guillory switched party affiliation back to Republican.
This will be Guillory's second run at the Lieutenant Governor's office. Back in 2015, he ran in a four-man race for the office and finished in last place with just 8% of the primary votes.
Billy Nungesser is the current Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana and has announced he is seeking a third term. He has been in that office since 2016.
