According to Mitzi Breaux of Vitalant, the cold and flu season, paired with the inclement weather as of late, have been affecting blood donations.

From Mitzi Breaux:

Our local blood inventory, along with the nation’s supply, continues to struggle.  Cold and flu season, which seems to be more widespread across Acadiana lately, has had an extreme impact on donations.  Also, with relentless winter weather in other parts of the country, our nation’s blood supply has been severely impacted, making it difficult to move blood throughout the country, when and where it is needed.  Right now all blood types are needed with a critical need for platelets and type O blood donations. - Mitzi Breaux, Vitalant Marketing and Communications Manager

Breaux asks that, if you are eligible, to please consider donating before the end of February, and to invite your friends and family to donate as well. The Vitalant donation center is located at 1503 Bertrand Drive, or visit vitalant.org to find a mobile blood drive close to you. You can get more information by calling 877-258-4825.
