The first new Halloween movie since 2009 hits theaters on October 19th. Here's what you need to know.

The Halloween series of films has become one of the most confusing for non - fans to understand. Here's how it breaks down:

Halloween - 1978
Halloween II - 1981
Halloween III (nothing to do with the first two movies)
Halloween IV - VI: sequels to Halloween & Halloween II
Halloween 20 Years Later: sequel to Halloween I & II that ignores parts IV - VI
Halloween 2007 - Rob Zombie reboot
Halloween II - 2009 sequel to Rob Zombie reboot

On October 19th, we'll get the newest installment, simply named Halloween. That's the third movie in the franchise to simply be named Halloween despite being a sequel to the original, also called Halloween. Confused yet?

Let's take a closer look at Halloween (2018):

    It’s Not A Reboot

Many articles have been calling the latest film a 'reboot' because it skips every sequel and reboot before it. It is not a reboot, though, but another sequel.

It's A Direct Sequel To The Original

Halloween (2018) is a direct sequel to the original 1978 classic of the same name directed by the legendary John Carpenter. The writers and director of the new film decided to skip Halloween II (1981) because they didn't like the idea of Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode being the sister of Michael Myers. Since Halloween IV - VI dealt with this idea, the filmmakers also decided to skip those films, picking up the story of Halloween '78 exactly 40 years later.

None Of The Other Sequels Count

By skipping all the sequels to the original film, director David Gordon Green (along with executive producer John Carpenter) are able to simplify the story for themselves and new audiences. After her friends were murdered by Michael Myers and narrowly escaping death herself, Laurie Strode spent her life preparing for the possibility that Myers would escape. That's exactly what leads us to the events of the new film.

    The 'Halloween Trinity' Returns

Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode back in 1998 for Halloween 20 Years Later, but director John Carpenter didn't want any involvement with the movie. The concept and script of the new film impressed both Curtis and Carpenter to return. Curtis will play an older and battle - ready Laurie Strode while Carpenter will serve as an executive producer and score the film like he did the original (he wrote, directed, and scored the first Halloween!)

Rounding out the 'Halloween Trinity' is original Michael Myers actor Nick Castle, who will don the mask for a special scene in the movie. All other appearances of Myers will feature actor/stuntman James Jude Courtney under the mask.

Myers will get the original mask back at some point in the new film. It's apparently been stored in a drawer or closet for 40 years.

    Michael Myers Has Been...Waiting

Like his iconic mask, Michael Myers has also been stored away for 40 years, forgotten by everyone but Laurie Strode. The new film will change the ending of the original slightly. Myers fell off a balcony after being shot 6 times by his psychologist, Dr. Loomis. When Loomis looks over the balcony, Myers has disappeared. The new film establishes that Myers was eventually captured by police and sent back to Smith's Grove Sanitarium.

Michael murdered his sister Judith when he was 6 and spent 15 years in Smith's Grove before escaping and targeting Laurie and her friends on Halloween night, 1978. There's no telling how much carnage he'll be responsible for after waiting another 40 years for Halloween night...
