The original "Star Trek" TV series premiered in Sept. 1966. Ratings plummeted in the second season, and NBC threatened to cancel the show mid season. A massive letter writing campaign saved it. 50 years later, the franchise appears to be more popular than ever. The 16th movie, "Star Trek Beyond", took in $135 million in its opening weekend. There have been 6 Star Trek TV series. A 7th, "Star Trek Discovery" is currently in production, and slated for a January 2017 debut. We don't know much about what's in store. There are indications it may be a "prequel" to the original Series. Discovery's registry number is NCC 1031. The Enterprise, of course, is NCC 1701.
