Cold Snap Coming – How Cold Will it Get in Acadiana?

This has just been an odd weather year. Here in Louisiana we've had five landfalling tropical systems and been affected by at least two or three more. Yesterday, as Hurricane Zeta was making landfall near Cocodrie, parts of Texas and Oklahoma were under ice storm warnings. Truly the transition from summer to fall to winter just isn't going to be "normal". But what in 2020 has been normal anyway?

This morning as you make your first steps out of the front door you will notice the heavy thick humid air of yesterday has been replaced by a crisp cool breeze. That's because a cold front that pushed Hurricane Zeta to our east has passed through the area. It's just one of two cold fronts that will affect South Louisiana over the next few days.

As the clouds break away and clear out on those gusty northerly breezed today you can expect the high temperature to only reach about 65 degrees. In the morning your day starting temperature should be about 47 degrees but wait. It's going to get cooler for the weekend.

A second front is forecast to push through the area on Sunday. So as you're setting your clocks back to standard time, you might also be firing up your furnace or space heater for the first time this year. The forecast lows for early next week could be in the low forty-degree range.

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac Lafayette and the I-10 corridor won't usually see its first frost until December 1st. So, the cooler temperatures are actually right on time and will be in line with seasonal expectations.

The next several days should offer some beautiful blue skies, a gorgeous full moon on Halloween night, the intoxicating smell of gumbo on the stove as maybe, just maybe, we can kiss the terrible tropical season of 2020 goodbye and welcome in what is forecast to be a cool but not too cold winter.
