The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking for your help in controlling disease and preventing its spread. And while a lot of us, U.S. Americans that is, won't like it, it is most definitely in our best interest.

The CDC is now recommending that gatherings of 50 people or more be canceled or postponed over the next eight weeks. To save you the trouble of getting out your calendar that's roughly the time between the now and the end of the first full week in May.

The reason for the recommendation is pretty self-explanatory. The precaution will be yet another deterrent to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The CDC stopped short of recommending that the day to day operations of schools and institutions of higher learning be altered, but in Louisiana, they already have been.

The idea is really very simple. The best way to beat the virus is to not get the virus. The best way to avoid the virus is to avoid contact with those that have been exposed to it. Since symptoms don't appear for several days many people could have the virus and not be aware of the fact. Hence the need to limit exposure to the general population.

These guidelines will no doubt effect fairs, festivals, concerts, dance recitals, graduations, and many other events. However, by following these guidelines we will be doing our part to slow the COVID-19 threat and its spread.
