BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Lawyers representing Alton Sterling’s five children have unsuccessfully argued for a quicker payout of a proposed $4.5 million settlement of their wrongful death lawsuit against the city-parish.

The Advocate reports the Metro Council rejected the attempt Wednesday and now the attorneys will either have to accept the five-year payment plan or go to trial. In 2016, Baton Rouge police responding to a complaint of a man with a gun outside a convenience store fatally shot Sterling.

His death had inflamed racial tensions in Louisiana’s capital and sparked widespread protests.
