Meet Your Next Maybe-Possible Celebrity Politician: Ashley Judd
According to Politico, the politically-active Judd is considering running against Republican Mitch McConnell in the 2014 senatorial election in her home state of Kentucky. She's already discussed the possibility of the run with other Democrats, and she's already conducting opposition research on herself.
“She is doing all the things that a serious candidate exploring a race should do,” said Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth, adding, “I think there are a lot of people, and I was one of them, who wanted to let her know that her candidacy would be an exciting prospect for us. That’s what I wanted her to know.”
Feelings about Judd's possible run are mixed among Democrats, with half thinking it would bring in cash and energize the election, and the other half worried that she's never run for office, could be too liberal for a conservative Kentucky, and doesn't currently live in the state.
“She’s got tremendous name recognition, and she’s going to be able to raise the funds she’d need to run," said Dan Logsdon, chairman of the Kentucky Democratic party. "But she also has got some issues with regard to certain stances she’s taken regarding coal that the Republicans will certainly try to exploit.”
At a recent liberal group get together, Judd was quoted as saying, “My deepest desire is to be useful. I want to help serve my fellow [citizens]. And I may be doing that to the best of my capacity ... in the space I’m already operating in. Or it may be time to look at possibly running for office.”
Sources also say Judd may wait until the 2016 election to run against Sen. Rand Paul instead.
Neither run may actually happen, but if they do, she just might know someone who could write her a pretty catchy ad jingle.
