Aretha Franklin has died at the age of 76 after battling advanced pancreatic cancer, according to a statement from her publicist. The statement was first sent to the Associated Press.
The 76-year-old had been surrounded by family and friends in a Detroit-area hospital, according to the entertainment website Showbiz 411.
Earlier this week, the family asked for prayers and privacy.
The "Queen of Soul" has dealt with numerous health issues over recent years, including a cancer diagnosis in 2010.
She announced her retirement from performing in 2017.
