Having a "No Kill" status by 2020 has been the goal of the hard working people at the Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Center.

Between the staff and volunteers, they are contanstly working to help find a home for all the pets that come to the shelter.

You have the opportunity to adopt a fur baby this weekend as the LASCC will host and adoption day this Saturday.

The event, called "Second Chance Saturday" will be held at the shelter which is located at 613 West Pont Des Mouton Road. You can visit and/or adopt an animal between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Puppies, dogs, kittens and cats will all be available for adoption.

You can adopt free of charge is you are a veteran (please bring ID), or if you are a senior citizen, 65 or older. The center accepts cash, MasterCard, Discover and Visa.

For everyone else, the price is $35.

The pets you adopt from the center are already vaccinated, tested for heartworms, microchipped and spayed or neutered.

Director of the shelter, Shelley Delahoussaye says,

"Because of our no kill initiative, more pets are being surrendered by their owners with the confidence that their pet won't be put down. These surrenders are filling up the shelter, and we only have so much space. Although we are working toward building a new and larger shelter, these adoption events help us free up space in our current facility and continue to save lives. We have come a long way, but still have work to do. We are so grateful to our community and volunteers who continue to support our mission!"

Volunteer Andrea Mire suggests that if you must surrender your pet, you try anything possible to find a good home for your pet yourself.

Because the adoption event is being held this Saturday, "animals will not be accepted for intake on this day."

The center offers regular adoption hours Monday through Friday, from 1 p.m. through 4:30 p.m.
