After the fatal Grand 16 shooting, one of the victims is being remembered through a scholarship fund.

The public will be introduced to the Mayci Breaux Scholarship Fund next Thursday at a celebration event at Lafayette General Medical Center.

What started with a $100 donation from a radiology technician in Colorado following the Grand Theatre shooting has reached $20,000 in less than one year.

Donations to the Foundation for the scholarship, with the cooperation of Mayci’s family, came from Lafayette General Health employees, Acadiana businesses and other philanthropic organizations to honor of Mayci’s legacy as a radiation-technology student.

In the release from Lafayette General Health, organizers said Breaux had toured Lafayette General Medical Center just weeks before, in preparation to begin clinical courses at the facility.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student(s) enrolled in a radiology technology program.  The scholarship fund will continue to grow, as partial proceeds from Lafayette General’s annual fund-raising gumbo cook-off will go towards this initiative.
