Abbott Receives Approval For Test That Can Detect COVID-19 In 5 Minutes

According to a press release from Abbott on Friday, the company has received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a test that can detect COVID-19 in as little as five minutes for positive results.

The release notes that negative results can be received in about 13 minutes.

The test will be able to be used in physicians' offices or urgent care clinics. It can also be used in more non-traditional places because of its size.

Abbott says the new test is a lightweight box about the size of a toaster which makes it easily able to sit in a variety of locations.

The company says they are on track to deliver 50,000 COVID-19 tests per day to the U.S. healthcare system.
