Louisiana Prepares For Upcoming Hurricane Season, Names of Storms Announced
(KTDY) - Hurricane season is rapidly approaching as we get into the Spring months, and now we know the names of potential storms this season.
While much of the Gulf Coast was spared from storms last year, you never really know what to expect as we enter a new season, which starts on June 1, 2026. We now know which names will be assigned to storms.
As a kid, while I didn't fear hurricanes, I did always look forward to when the list of names would come out before hurricane season. For several years, I'd rush over to the list to see if my name or anyone I knew was on the list of storm names.
Now, as an adult, I don't look forward to the list of names being announced before the next hurricane season, because it is a quick reminder that the season is rapidly approaching.
And as we approach another hurricane season, it isn't too early to start preparing for 2026. Sure, we don't know if the season will be active, but it's never wrong to prepare.
Hurricane Preparation Tips
According to Ready.gov, you should start cleaning around your home, which they mean by drains and gutters. Remove debris so that water can drain freely in the event of heavy downpours.
In addition to preparing your home for the upcoming hurricane season, you should already have an evacuation plan and know where all of your important documents are so that you can quickly retrieve them before evacuating your home for a storm.
As always, make sure all your portable radios in your home have new batteries, and it's never too soon to stock your pantry with nonperishable food items. It is also a great idea in this technological age to have weather apps, including this station's mobile app, on your phone so you can get updates if a storm is impacting your area.
Lastly, now is a good time to make sure you have flashlights in your house that are ready, and if you have a generator, now is a great time to run it, with something plugged into it, to make sure it is functioning properly.
Now, let's take a look at the names that will be assigned to hurricanes in 2026, and let's pray that we don't get to all of them on the list. The first storm of 2026 will be named "Arthur." Check out the list below and see if a storm this year will share your name, or if there's a loved one's name on the hurricane list for 2026.
When Does Hurricane Season End
According to the National Hurricane Center, the 2026 hurricane season ends on November 30.
