Ceiling fans are not just an attractive fixture hanging from your ceiling, they actually turn for a reason.  They also have a switch that allows them to turn clockwise or counter-clockwise.  This small switch, set in the right position, can save you money and keep you comfortable.

In Summertime, ceiling fans should be set to turn counter-clockwise.  That means if you look up at the fan, it should be spinning opposite that of a clock.  This will force air downward from the ceiling toward the center of the room.  The air blowing on your skin will make you feel cooler.

In Winter, ceiling fans should be set to turn clockwise.  This will force the warmer air near the ceiling up and down the outer walls of the room.  The warmer air will be forced downward yet not directly on you.
