(KTDY) - The Federal Drug Administration has announced a recall on shrimp sold in Walmart stores, and some may have been sold in Louisiana and Texas stores.

According to the recall, the contaminated seafood may be radioactive. The FDA has recalled several lots of Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp after they detected Cesium-137 (a man-made radioactive isotope) in several shipments of the product.

The recall, which you can read below, states that the amount detected in one of the shipments was below the FDA’s “derived intervention level” for Cs-137 and does not pose an “acute hazard” to humans. However, the FDA said the recall and other measures they’ve taken are to “reduce exposure to low-level radiation.”

If someone is exposed to low levels of radiation for a lengthy period, this only increases their risk of having to battle cancer in the future.

Here's where the shrimp product under the nationwide recall was sold: In Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.

The recalled shrimp was imported from Indonesia and processed by the firm PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati. The FDA said they are working with Indonesian seafood regulatory authorities to discover the cause of the contamination.

If you have this product in your freezer (Frozen Great Value Shrimp), you are advised to throw it away immediately and not serve it to anyone.

Look for this information on bags of shrimp that are under recall:

The FDA continues to investigate this contamination, and it is being reported that contaminated shrimp were found in four U.S. ports.

The government agency does report: "None of the products that tested positive for Cs-137 has entered U.S. commerce." However, you should rid your freezer of any product labeled under this recall.

We also encourage you to share this with others on social media so that they are aware of this potential hazard in their home.
