LSU Defeats Florida St., Advances To CWS Semifinals
The LSU Tigers remain alive in the 2017 College World Series.
LSU advanced into the CWS version of the Final Four, after defeating the Florida St. Seminoles, 7-4, in an elimination game on Wednesday night at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.
Senior left-hander Jared Poche' (12-3) put the Tigers in the semifinal round, recording his record-setting 39th career victory.
Poche', who broke a tie with Scott Schultz to become LSU's career wins leader, threw eight innings, allowing only four runs, including only three earned runs, on seven hits, while walking two and striking out four.
The second inning proved to be the key one for LSU with the bats, as they scored five times in the frame off of Florida St. starter Cole Sands (6-4).
Greg Deichmann doubled, moved to third on a Zach Watson single, and then scored on an RBI single off the bat of Josh Smith, giving LSU a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers went on to score four more runs in the frame, with the highlight being a three-run home run by Jake Slaughter, as they extended their lead to 5-0.
Florida State answered in the bottom of the second inning with its first hit off Poche', a solo homer by Drew Mendoza, to trim the deficit to 5-1, before LSU scored two insurance runs in the top half of the 9th inning, to make it 7-2.
The Seminoles, refusing to give up, scored two runs in the bottom half of the 9th inning, but it was too little, to late, as LSU held on for the 3-run victory, and a spot in the semifinals.
LSU, who outhit Florida St., 10-7, were led at the plate by Zach Watson, who went 3-for-5, along with a run scored and a run batted in, while Slaughter provided the three-run homer.
With the triumph, LSU improved to 50-18 on the season, while Florida St. ended their season with an overall mark of (46-23).
The Tigers will next face top-seeded Oregon State on Friday. needing to defeat the Beavers twice to advance to the best-of-three CWS Final series.
Friday's game is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 2 pm (central).
If LSU wins, the two teams would meet again on Saturday, at either 2 or 7 p.m.
