I don't think it's a secret that Louisiana ranks low on the intelligence meter here in the United States, but this is embarrassing.

According to Zippia, who did this study, the smartest states are in the northeast. The 'not so bright' states include Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Nevada.

Louisiana tied with Mississippi as the bottom states.

Now, the way that these numbers came about can be a little questionable. Zippia says they figured the numbers by accounting for the number of people (over 25) with college degrees in each state, as well as the number of people (16-19) who have dropped out of high school.

Louisiana has an average of 22.1% of people over 25 that have college degrees with an average of 7.4% of people 16-19 that have dropped out of high school.

Does having a college degree make a person smarter than one without a degree? Zippia admittedly stayed away from "objective" stats like IQ and SAT scores.

Here is a map of the smartest all the way to those states that are not the brightest:

The top five states include:

  1. Massachusetts
  2. Vermont
  3. Virginia
  4. New Hampshire
  5. Connecticut

What do you think of Louisiana being at the bottom, once again, as far as smarts go?
