The Lafayette man who prosecutors say killed his girlfriend's son will avoid the death penalty after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

According to our news parters at KATC, Landon Broussard entered that guilty plea during a motions hearing on Tuesday. He will now serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Broussard was scheduled to go on trial for first-degree murder in the case in December.

According to prosecutors, Broussard beat and killed his girlfriend's son, Julian Madera, in November 2012. At the time, investigators said Broussard claimed he found Madera unresponsive in the bathtub of his E. Broussard Road home and bringing Madera's lifeless body to his grandmother's home, where Broussard lived with boy's mother. Broussard also told investigators that a door had fallen on Madera the night before. Detectives wrote in affidavits that Madera's body was bruised, his eyes were swollen shut, and that one of his ears was torn, making Broussard's claims implausible.

In 2014, Madera's mother, Laura Smith, pleaded guilty to cruelty to a juvenile in connection with the case.
