NEW ORLEANS, La. (KPEL News) - Louisiana is known for its tourism industry, often attracting folks from all over the world to experience our cuisine and culture. But the hotel experience can sometimes be a mixed bag.

However, we do have several places around the state that do things right, and on a list of the 500 best hotels in the world, two can be found right here in Louisiana.

Travel + Leisure magazine's May issue featured a list of readers' 500 Best Hotels in the World, and in the list of hotels found in the U.S., two are found in Louisiana. And, as one might expect, both are found in our most famous/infamous city.

Maison De La Luz - New Orleans, Louisiana

Maison De La Luz is a relatively new hotel located on Carondelet Street in New Orleans. The building, which was formerly an office building, is a "bejeweled takeover in history New Orleans," Conde Nast wrote in a review, adding that "There's nothing like it in the city."

"The hotel is a new venture from the Ace Hotel Group, one of two of a new breed (the other is Sister City in New York)," the Conde Nast review explained. "Studio Shamshiri designed the look with no small degree of success; if their aim was a luxurious townhouse owned by a world traveler, that’s precisely what they achieved."

Hotel Saint Vincent - New Orleans

"A country club-style oasis in the Lower Garden District with elevated Southern chic design and interestingly varied social spaces," Conde Nast said about the second New Orleans hotel to appear on the Travel + Leisure 500 Best Hotels list. "This building started life as a 19th-century orphanage run by local nuns, but those days of religious privation are a distant memory and it’s now one of the city’s most in-demand boutique properties."

Great Options in New Orleans

If you're looking for a place to stay while visiting the Big Easy, then New Orleans has a lot of great options. Not only do you have iconic places like The Roosevelt, The Saint, and the two mentioned above, but you also have one of the prettiest in the state located near the historic center of the city.

Hotel Peter and Paul

RedBook has list of the Absolute Prettiest Hotels to Stay in Each State, with some amazing locations for all of them. But when it comes to Louisiana, the list is clear that the Hotel Peter and Paul is the prettiest in Louisiana, and if you check them out, you might find it hard to disagree.

According to the hotel's website, this beautiful space is "the result of a four-year restoration of a former Catholic church and school."

"Each building has its own inspiration and narrative," it continues, "with the resulting restoration ensuring that no two guest rooms are exactly alike."

On TripAdvisor, the Hotel Peter and Paul boasts a 4.5 out of 5 average rating with tons of positive feedback.

"Very unique place … an old Catholic Church, school and rectory," one reviewer noted. "They have done an extraordinary job of converting it into a boutique hotel while still retaining its originality. Not in a “walkable” area in my opinion. We Uber-ed into downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter. Delightful ice cream shoppe on the premises!"

"Love the vibe, the place and the location," another said. "Great hotel not far from everything but far away to enjoy a lovely part of New Orleans. A lovely neighbourhood, quiet and safe. Would highly recommend this hotel for the service the location the standard of the room. Will come back with great pleasure!"

"Just cannot fault this gorgeous boutique hotel," one person wrote at TripAdvisor. "We loved the friendly neighbourhood of Marigny, and we enjoyed being slightly away from the noise of the French Quarter. But it is a very easy walk to the French market, Frenchman St and all the main attractions. The service at the hotel was wonderful, with staff really going out of their way to make our stay special. We have every intention of coming back!"

It's definitely worth a visit if nothing else. A historic Catholic church and school converted into a hotel? That sounds like a pretty unique stay.

A Guide to Louisiana Slang You Should Know Before Visiting the Bayou State

You don't need to know French to visit Louisiana. Truthfully, not many of the people that live here do. But if you plan to take a trip to the Bayou State and don't understand the slang, you'll likely hear "pauvre bete" and a few terms that sound strange. Here's a handy guide that may help you cut through the confusion of the Cajun vernacular.
