New Iberia Man Identified as Victim in Fatal St. Martin Parish Crash
A New Iberia man has been identified as the victim in a fatal crash that occurred early Tuesday morning in St. Martin Parish.
According to Louisiana State Police, 33-year-old Trey Comeaux was walking south on Louisiana Highway 31 near Lady of the Lake Road around 5:00 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle. Authorities say Comeaux was pushing a bicycle in heavy fog when a 2012 Dodge Ram, also traveling south, hit him for reasons still under investigation. The impact pushed Comeaux into the northbound lane, where he was struck again by a Dodge Charger.
Comeaux suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of both vehicles were properly restrained and uninjured.
State Police reported that the driver of the Dodge Ram showed no signs of impairment and voluntarily provided a breath sample, which revealed no alcohol present. Toxicology samples were taken from Comeaux for analysis, as is standard procedure, and the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Authorities are using this incident to remind pedestrians of Louisiana's safety laws. These laws require individuals to use sidewalks when available or, if none exist, to walk facing oncoming traffic when practical. They also urge pedestrians to wear bright or reflective clothing in low-visibility conditions, such as fog or rain, to increase their chances of being seen by motorists.
