This is horrific.

The Advocate reports that a man in south Louisiana has been arrested after allegedly cutting the tails off of nutria that were still alive.

Harris DeHart reportedly posted videos on social media that showed him cutting the tails off of nutria and then releasing them back into the wild.

When the State Wildlife Agents were alerted of the disturbing videos, they began their investigation and ultimately arrested the man in St. Mary Parish.

Nutria in Louisiana is considered to be an invasive species and the state does reward $6 per tail to permitted hunters, but the nutria must first be killed before the tail is removed.

For years conservationists have reported how much damage nutria has done to the Louisiana coastline, thus that is why there is a bounty on the animal in our state.

According to the report by the Advocate, it is unclear as to why DeHart elected to remove the tails from the nutria, but not kill them.

DeHart was booked into the St. Mary Parish Jail on charges of aggravated animal cruelty, illegal hunting, and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

In one video he had a juvenile with him in a boat, without a proper floatation device, and when agents noticed that they also fined DeHart $50 for the violation.
